From the President – February 25, 2021

I hope everyone enjoyed our Purim celebration. Thank you Rabbi Dean, Cantor Shayndel, Jane Durango, Carl Nelson, Maggie Jacobs, Alan Marks, Audrey Berger and the marketing committee, Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, and all who attended. I know our Beware the Ides of Adar company enjoyed performing our portion for you.  Perhaps the tradition of Purim spiels can be included in our future Purim observances?

And we have more to come.  On March 7, we are having our first of what I hope will be many TBH Movie Nights featuring one of my all-time favorite films, A Night At the Opera.  I cannot think of a better movie for our difficult times than the Marx Brothers 1935 classic.  Developed on Vaudeville stages, the Marx Brothers’ style of comedy ranges from clever word play to innuendo to broad slapstick physical comedy all combining for a wild comic romp.  The American Film Institute included A Night At the Opera in its list of the 15 best comic movies of all time and we can use a good laugh now.  I can’t take credit for this choice, but I heartily endorse it and am looking forward to it.

By the way, a story I once read featured Julius (Groucho) Marx.  It was claimed that he was with his daughter when he tried to join a Country Club.  As they explained that the club was “exclusive”, Julius noticed his daughter looking longingly at the swimming pool.  “Since my daughter is only half Jewish, can she go in up to her knees?”  quipped Julius.  Julius (Groucho) also said that, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”  Personally, I am happy that Mercedes and I  joined TBH and thrilled to be accepted as members.

We are Temple Beth Hillel.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me?

If I am not for others, what am I?

And if not now, when?   -Rabbi Hillel
