From the President – April 23, 2020

First the good news (again)! As of 10:00 AM on Wednesday 4/22 we as a community have raised $3,333 dollars for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. This is walking the walk. Thank you all for caring and doing.

Let me also add that if any of us are in need PLEASE do not be shy about asking for help with food. You can look here for distribution sites, or call 925.676.7543 for more detailed information. Remember the commandment that health concerns outweigh any other mitzvot.

Speaking of health being the prime directive, I am deeply concerned about some behaviors I am seeing. Yes we are all sick and tired of being stuck indoors. Some of us are out of work through no fault of our own and are genuinely hurting. These frustrations are spilling out into pushback against the shutdown orders. I implore all of us to not give in to these impulses. We are forbidden to endanger ourselves – and the others we interact with. According to today’s New York Times Contra Costa County has 749 confirmed covid-19 cases. That is 88 per 100,000 residents. New York City has 1,650 cases per 100,000 residents. Why? We closed down early. If the argument about population density comes up, suburban Rockland County (New York) has 2,956 per 100.000. Let me repeat – we shut down early.

I cannot stress this enough. The strongest response to the commandment to preserve health is to isolate as much as possible. From a personal perspective, Roxann and I have a grandson born April 21 and a grand-nephew born March 14, and we have no idea when we will meet them. But the risk isn’t worth it.

The marquee of one of the churches on Appian Way says it best: “God needs our help. Stay inside. Wash your hands. Pray.”

We will take care of each other. We must be safe. We must do safe.

We are what we do.
